As parents of students, you often end up being the decision-maker/advisor
when it comes to your son's or daughter's health insurance while
they are attending college. For most parents, this is neither
fun nor easy, but it is incredibly important.
At CampusCoverage.com our goal is to give you all of the information
you need to make a wise decision.
On our website you will find a recent article written by
US News & World Report that warns students about many
of the inadequacies of school-sponsored plans. This does not
mean that all school plans are bad, but you need to be aware
of what they are set up to do. More often than not, school
plans have low maximum benefits (sometimes as low as $50,000
or less). Nowadays many serious illnesses, surgical procedures
or accidents can cost more than that amount leaving the student
owing a substantial sum of money. Keep in mind; this is a
worse case scenario.
Sometimes the best solution is not to replace the school's
plan, but to compliment it with a high-deductible catastrophic
policy with a maximum benefit of $1 million or more. This
can give students and parents alike the peace of mind they
need.
In other cases, the premiums on school plans are so high,
it makes sense to replace it with a more comprehensive private
plan with lower premiums. (Better coverage with lower premiums
is always a good thing).
And still in other cases, it might make sense to purchase
the school' plan.
The point is that we give you all of the information and
let you make the decision. We have Customer Service Representatives
standing by that can help answer questions as you go about
comparing your options.
CampusCoverage.com is the only resource where students and parents
can see the school-sponsored plan and all of the other options
on the same page in the same format. This allows you to compare
'apples to apples'.
As you go through the steps to view insurance plans and quote
information, you will be asked to choose the state where your
child is attending school then the name of the school. At
this point you will need to enter your child's birth date
along with the zip code where your child is living (if your
child has not moved to the school area yet, simply enter the
school's zip code). This is done so that you will only see
the plans that can be purchased in your child's geographic
area.
You will be asked to select a deductible amount (over $1,000,
between $600 and $1,000 or under $500). Most school plans
have deductibles of less than $500 per policy year, so you
may want to start by looking at all plans with deductibles
of $500 or less.
One thing to keep in mind is that many of the student health
centers on campuses throughout the country allow students
to use the basic services (Dr. visits, prescription drugs
and basic lab work) regardless of whether or not the student
has purchased the school-sponsored plan. If this is the case
with your son's or daughter's school, you may want to consider
purchasing a higher deductible plan (which saves you money
on premiums) and have your child use the student health center
for basic needs and the insurance plan for more catastrophic
needs (surgery, for example).
CampusCoverage.com allows you to see the school's plan online,
but you can only apply for it through the school in most cases.
However, all of the alternatives to the school's plan that
you will see can be purchased from our website. Once you see
the plan you like, you simply click the 'apply' button, and
then print off the application with the instruction sheet.
After the application has been completed and signed, the instruction
sheet tells you where to send it. From this point on, we will
be in touch with the insurance company as well as you and
your student.
At any point during the information collection process or
as you are filling out an application, if you have any questions
please don't hesitate to call us at 888-236-1442.
